Pulled Hamstring
A puled hamstring or torn hamstring is usually the result of overloading one of the hamstring muscles on the back of the upper leg. The muscle fibers tear, causing pain and internal bleeding within the hamstring. Because of this internal bleeding, the muscle can go into spasm, essentially "locking down."

A pulled hamstring is usually accompanied by significant pain or tenderness. To recover, proper circulation is necessary and the muscle needs to be released from spasm. When circulation is moving properly and tension is released, fluids that create swelling can be removed, accumulated toxins can be cleared and the healing process can begin.
A common initial treatment is compression and icing. One way to do this is to sit on a bag of crushed ice for 10 - 20 minutes at a time. On the positive side, ice limits swelling. However, because it accomplishes this by reducing circulation, it can slow the body's healing process.

Hamstring Maintenance
To maintain your hamstrings and help prevent injury, keep them both supple and strong. If they are both elastic and muscular, they can handle unforeseen stresses that would otherwise cause a pull.
